A few weeks ago I took advantage of an offer at savastore.com on some NAS drive enclosures. They were MEGA cheap – I’m talking £15 each, and then £10 off at google checkout, ie. £20 for two.
Anyway – I bought them and then realised I didn’t have any spare, old, IDE drives… So bought some 320GB IDE’s with google checkout discount as well (lol).
Got them all rigged up – but then found out that the bloody things would appear on the network for about 2 minutes and then suddenly freeze. I tried replacing the firmware – but they just kept doing it.
It was at this point that I realised that although I was writing the firmware with NAS-BASIC46 NAS-BASIC47 NAS-BASIC48 etc. this wasn’t actually overwriting the kernel in the device! (Took me ages to figure that out!!).
Turns out that if you overwrite the loader (kernel) with boot loader 70 – they start to work fine! So if you just so happen to have a LANDISK and it’s freezing – try replacing the bootloader. You can find the firmware and bootloader here.
Basically – you go to Maintenance, and upload the NAS-BASIC bin firmware. Then reboot, then do the same again for the loader and reboot. Then they work fine!

I’ve had the pleasure of watching the Michael Moore film SiCKO the other day – and I’ve got to say that it’s his best film yet.
Investigating the American health service, the film highlights the inequalities in a world where money-is-everything. It describes people being left to bleed to death, unwanted heroes and unwanted patients being dumped at the side of the street.
I knew that American health care was a dodgy business – and that it was unachievably expensive for the poor – but the lengths that the insurance companies go to get out of paying is awful. It’s what I suspected – but I’ve never seen it highlighted like this before.
The film describes Canada, the UK, France and Cuba as examples of countries that offer free healthcare to their citizens, and it does make you grateful (as a citizen of the UK) for what we’ve got.
Overall it paints a very bleak picture for the USA if they decide to stay with their money-driven health service.
It really does come down to comparing it to the fire and police service: What would you say if you called the fire station up and they asked if you were insured before they could come out?
